Thanks for your interest in the Pocahontas tribe. We meet once a month as a tribe during the school year. The meetings, which are held the second Sunday of each month from September to May (except December), run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Youth Center, 50 1/2 Raupp Blvd., in Buffalo Grove. The Youth Center is the little-noticed building next to the Buffalo Grove Village Hall near the west parking lot for the Buffalo Grove Golf Course.
Dads and daughters spend time at each meeting learning a little about each other, playing games or participating in a group activity (crafts, tie-dying, woodworking). Sometimes we meet off-site for chocolate dipping or to participate in a community service project—a food drive during the holidays, for example.
The Prairie Nation, which is the larger organization to which the Pocahontas tribe belongs, holds events that we can participate in as well. Each year the nation marches in the Buffalo Grove Days Parade. Other nation events have included ice skating, sporting events, a Pine Wood Derby, Rain Gutter Regatta, etc.
Among the highlights of the Indian Princess program for many of us are the three weekend overnighters throughout the school year. The fall and winter overnighters are always at a camp with cabins, while the spring overnighter is a tent out. The campouts officially begin with an opening ceremony around the flag pole on Saturday morning. Many of us, however, like to go up Friday night. In addition to the campouts, some years the nation organizes a sleepover at a museum, such as the Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum, etc.
